Ken asks…

Is it okay to download heaps of movies/games from rapidshare, torrents, etc from public places?

Is it possible/okay to download movies and games from sites such as rapidshare, megaupload and use torrents and limewire when you’re at public places like libraries and cafes (If they have internet access)?

I want to do this to save download bandwidth at home, is this okay?

admin answers:

It would have the same risks as anywhere else – are you downloading copyrighted material that you could be sued for, and could they contain malware like viruses/trojans etc.

As long as the library or cafe is offering free access, you should be able to do whatever kind of internet work you want. However, I have heard of someone who used the wireless connection near a library after it closed, perfectly legal while it was open, and they got charged with theft of service.

Carol asks…

where I can read download / copyright laws explained 101?

I’d like to learn what is legal and illegal when it comes to file sharing / downloading movies , tv shows, software, music, etc. I’m looking for specifics that say exactly what you can and and can’t do, and where a specific law is arising from.

It’d help to to learn what can be copied and not copied from stuff borrowed from family and friends.

Specific sites that show this? Thanks!

admin answers:

I’d suggest the official U.S. Copyright basics website. Even though it’s a government website, it’s actually fairly easy to understand.

Chris asks…

What films/tv shows can you copy and burn onto DVD and sell?

A friend of mine apparently found a few films and TV shows from the ‘black and white’ era where the copyright was done in such a way where it made it legal to burn copies of them onto dvds and sell them on.
A) Is this possible?
B) If so Why?
C) What examples of this are there?

admin answers:

Yes it possible and many make money off it such as movies like McLintock! (1963) being one of the best examples http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057298/
When a Copyright expires and no one renews it the film is called “Public Domain”
This site is the best one for good videos

another example

Just do a search of ‘Public Domain movies’ and you will see a lot of films that are free and legal to download and some sell them yet there are some legal hurdles you have when you release them.
